Virtual Reality

However, what’s wrong with this picture?

DigitalGalleryImage_01.tiff
  • • The screen is “broadcasting” not displaying interaction.
  • • The woman on the stool wearing an HMD has no controllers, no haptic feedback, and no agency in her experience.
  • • She has only 4 degrees of freedom (left/right, up/down inside a 360 degree sphere), not 6 degrees of freedom.
  • • She is tethered to a computer with a cable.
  • • Unacceptable Old School 2014

If interested, here is a two-part blog on the history of the Virtual Reality headsets.

It’s missing most elements which create Immersion and Agency

  • • Six degrees of Freedom
  • • FOV 90 - 210 degrees (the human field-of-vision is 220)
  • • Haptics (haptic gloves, rumble platforms, subaudio body packs, full body suits TeslaSuit, etc.)
  • • Gaze Selection and Timed Gaze
  • • Voice Recognition
  • • Head Gesture Recognition
  • • Controller Inputs
  • • 360 degree spatialized audio

Other Considerations:

Is it an Embodied Experience?

Does it qualify as an Empathy Machine?

Is there User-Generated Content?

What are the Social, Psychological, and Political aspects?

Markerless Facial Capture for 3D Animation

I created this as an introductory video for the “Immersive Journalism” meetup at CSU Long Beach. It was my first (crude) attempt with the FaceShift markerless capture system and the PrimeSense infrared camera.  More to follow.
